When the snow melts in Saskatoon, the ground is often still frozen, so meltwater has nowhere to go but toward your foundation. A little preparation in March and April can save you a flooded basement.
Before the Melt
- Test your sump pump. Pour a bucket of water into the pit and make sure it switches on and drains. Consider a battery backup.
- Extend your downspouts. They should discharge at least 2 metres away from the house.
- Move snow away from the foundation. Shovel a clear strip about a metre wide around the house.
- Check your grading. Soil should slope away from the house, not toward it.
- Clear storm drains and catch basins near your property so water can drain off the street.
- Lift valuables off the basement floor and store them in plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes.
Check Your Insurance
Overland flooding and sewer backup are often separate add-ons to a home insurance policy. Call your broker before spring to find out what you are covered for.
If Water Gets In
- Stay out of the water if electricity may be involved.
- Move belongings to a dry area and take photos for your insurance.
- Call your insurer, then call a restoration company to start drying right away. Mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours.
